Sunday Sermon - February 15, 2026
|
Speaker: Pastor T. C. Johnson
Date: February 15, 2026
Topic: The Church is a Sure Thing
Scripture: Matthew 16:13-18
Sermon Summary
Topic: The Church is a Sure Thing
Matthew 16:13-18 (KJV)
13 “When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? 14 And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. 15 He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? 16And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou are the Christ, the Son of the Living God. 17 And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18 And I say also unto thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.’
In the African American community in which I both serve and worship, it is obvious that the Christian Church is losing the influence it once wielded. There are both internal and external factors that affect the present demise, loss, or decrease. When we study the role that the Black Church played in the life of African Americans and their 400 years struggle for justice and equality, the historical significance becomes evident. The external forces against them were insurmountable when it comes down to human efforts, but even in the face of brutal opposition, societal, and governmental oppression, they maintained hope and lived with the faith that the message about a just God and a liberating Jesus would prevail; or, in their words, "see them through." In a word, it was through the Church that they developed profound unity and deep faith in God despite the will, desire, and attempts being levied to keep them suppressed. It was their commitment to Church and devotion to God that gave them hope as they envisioned a better day for the generations to follow. Is it possible that these negative societal situations forced upon them a great awareness of God, and therefore, through the Black Church, developed a hope against all odds? If so, it means that today's Black Church may be declining due to a lack of sense of need and knowledge of the dire nature of the communities' present situation. The message encourages believers not to become dissuaded or discouraged by public opinions or observations. In the text, Jesus poses a question about the 'word on the streets' relating to His identity: first, that external viewpoint. Yet, the most important question is personal: "who do you say that I am?" The issue becomes personal and the answer comes from the revelation of God, which speaks to us out of our exposure and experience with God.
Be Blessed,
Pastor T.C. Johnson
