THE OTHER SIDE OF LIFE’S MOUNTAINS
Hebrews 12:1-2 (KJV) 1 Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about with so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that is set before us, 2 Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
The writer of Hebrews presents life in the analogy of a foot race in an arena where the bleachers are filled with former runners. They have finished the race themselves and are now witnesses cheering those who are still in the race of a faithful life. Read chapter eleven (11) to see a list of some of the names of those who are in the bleachers and the mountains they had to deal with. The Mountain is something that threatens to impede or possibly prohibit the runner’s forward progress, or at the least, make the race so much harder to run. One of the things that we learn is that every believer must be prepared to encounter mountains, so don’t set up camp in 'Pity-Me Park'. Rather, consider people like Abraham who had to deal with Mount Moriah, or Elijah, who had to deal with Mount Carmel. The text instructs us to look to Jesus and the way He endured His Mountain (Mount Calvary, the cross). Jesus did not focus on the mountain; he considered the joy on the other side which must have been encouragement to continue the race.
The letter of Hebrews was written to a young Christian Church made up of Jewish members who had converted from Judaism to become a part of the people of the Way. They were being persecuted by their own people as well as the Grecians, Romans, and the world. Those who study the letter will notice that the Hebrews were trying to turn back to their old Jewish traditions. The writer throughout the first ten chapters does a parallel point-to-point comparison/critique of the doctrine of Jesus and that of Judaism, Mosaic Law, and their traditions to show that the Grace provided by Jesus is so much more superior to the Law and all the traditions. In chapter 11, he reminds them to ‘consider’ their ancestors who had kept the faith; enduring hardship while running the race of a faithful life. In Hebrews 12:2, the writer instructs them to “look unto Jesus” who looked beyond the cross to the joy that was on the other side of the mountain. Jesus looked over the cross to the satisfaction of His Father and the salvation of all who would believe; He looked to victory over death and the grave; He looked to all power being placed in His hands; He looked to ascending back to the Father; He looked to being seated at the right hand of God; He looked to the future coronation and title that would be bestowed, “King of Kings and Lord of Lords.” For the joy of these things, He endured the cross and despised the shame all because of what was on other side of the mountain.
