Holding on to God’s Unchanging Hand
Job 13:15 (KJV) 15 Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him: but I will maintain mine own ways before him.
Daniel 3:17-18 (KJV) 17 If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. 18 But if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not serve thy gods, nor worship the golden image which thou hast set up.
Habakkuk 3:16-18 (KJV) 17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: 18 Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation.
This message was to encourage God’s people to stay solid in the faith even during difficult times and when things don’t go the way that they are expected. Some of us view God as a Superman-like figure who always shows up and rescues His people from trouble, and when relief does not come, our faith falters. The voices in the three texts provide examples of how to have a real and genuine relationship with God. Before Moses and the Law, or the Temple, Judges or Prophets, Kings, or, the Kingdom of Israel, Job, who had lost everything, his health and friends included, kept holding on to his understanding of the righteousness of God. The Hebrew boys kept holding on even though they were being oppressed and persecuted by an evil government knowing that God could deliver them; but if He hadn’t, they would still hold on to God’s unchanging hand. Habakkuk encourages God’s people to praise God even when we do not see how we are going to survive. In these uncertain times we must remember that our ancestors kept holding on through Slavery, Jim Crow, and lynchings. We, too, must remain faithful and hold on during this 'Jane Crow' mentality: imposing prison pipelines, as well as the attacks on democracy and civil rights. Let us Hold on to God’s Unchanging Hand.
