"Making The Best of a Bad Situation"
Jeremiah 29: 4-14
In life we all will have to navigate both good and bad situations. Some of these good and bad situations are outside of our control, especially in our youth. Once we are "grown", the majority of the situations we find ourselves in are the consequences of our own decisions. Let me just speak for me. The bad situations that I have found myself in are no one’s fault but my own. Whether the bad situations we find ourselves in are our fault or someone else's, we will still be stuck trying to "Make the Best of a Bad Situation."
In Jeremiah 29 we read the people of Israel have found themselves in a bad situation, captive in Babylon, and it is all their fault. Their pride, rebellion, and lack of honor for God have gotten them in this place. God gave them chance after chance and warning after warning through the prophets to change their ways and turn back to God, but they refused. So, God allowed for them to be taken captive in Babylon. Even in their bad situation, that they caused, God still had a word of Mercy and Grace through the prophet Jeremiah. There are four things I found in Jeremiah's message that we can do to help us "Make the Best of a Bad Situation."
1. Be Productive: In verses 5-6 he tells them to build houses and plant gardens and have kids and grandkids. Bad situations have a way of making us feel depressed and we don't even want to get out of bed to handle our responsibilities. But being idle will only make our situation worse. We must be productive if we want to make the best of the bad situation.
2. Be Peaceful: In verse 7 he tells them to seek the peace of the land. Being bitter, nasty, and mean to the people around you will not make your situation better. God reminds them that it is because of Him that they are where they are. If we want to make the best of our bad situation, we must be peaceful.
3. Be Mindful: In verses 8-9 he tells them not to listen to the prophets and fortune tellers that are trying to take advantage of them by telling them what they want to hear instead of telling them the truth. In bad situations we can become vulnerable and should be mindful of who we give our ear to.
4. Be hopeful: Verses 10-14 remind us that we can be hopeful even in bad situations because our struggle has a time limit and God still has good plans for us. We can be hopeful because when we seek Him with our whole heart he will restore us to a better situation.
Jesus is our example of what it’s like to "Make the Best of a Bad Situation." When we think about how bad our situation is we should be reminded of all the bad things He suffered on our behalf to pay the price to redeem us from our sins. We should be reminded of how God turned Jesus' bad situation into a glorious one and He can do
the same for us!
