Sermon Title: The Power of Love
Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:17; Romans 12:2
Preacher: Pastor T. C. Johnson
Luke 6:27-35 (TLB) 27 "Listen, all of you. Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you. 28 Pray for the happiness of those who curse you; implore God’s blessing on those who hurt you. 29 "If someone slaps you on one cheek, let him slap the other too! If someone demands your coat, give him your shirt besides. 30 Give what you have to anyone who asks you for it; and when things are taken away from you, don’t worry about getting them back. 31 Treat others as you want them to treat you. 32 "Do you think you deserve credit for merely loving those who love you? Even the godless do that! 33 And if you do good only to those who do you good—is that so wonderful? Even sinners do that much! 34 And if you lend money only to those who can repay you, what good is that? Even the most wicked will lend to their own kind for full return! 35 "Love your enemies! Do good to them! Lend to them! And don’t be concerned about the fact that they won’t repay. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as sons of God: for he is kind to the unthankful and to those who are very wicked.
This is one of the most challenging instructions given by Jesus to his followers. It is given as Jesus’s Gospel Ministry is in its infancy, to those who were becoming attracted to Him because of both the message and method of His teaching. Jesus knew that they were accustomed to great philosophers with groups of followers who thought that being associated with well-known men was a personal benefit that would assist in the upward mobility of their self-worth and social standings. Jesus did not want His disciples to think that following Him would be the same as their cultural views and understandings, so He informs them in a gospel segment known as the Sermon on the Mount. The text is an excerpt from that sermon that causes stress because it is so counter-cultural as it relates to the way we are taught to behave and respond in real life. But if we believers are going to be like the heavenly Father we must act like Him. But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Love in the text means to do right by people who do not always do right by you; not because you want to, but because you want to obey God. Then, watch God make your enemy your footstool.
