Lord, Remember Me
Luke 23:39-41(TLB)
39 One of the criminals hanging beside him scoffed, "So you’re the Messiah, are you? Prove it by saving yourself—and us, too, while you’re at it!" 40 But the other criminal protested. "Don’t you even fear God when you are dying? 41 We deserve to die for our evil deeds, but this man hasn’t done one thing wrong." 42 Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your Kingdom." 43 And Jesus replied, "Today you will be with me in Paradise. This is a solemn promise."
This passage captures a conversation that happened on Calvary with Jesus hanging on the cross between two thieves. His haters hung Him between them to deflect and hide the fact that they were murdering an innocent person. The thieves represent all humanity because as it relates to Jesus, all mankind are criminals in the kingdom of God and guilty of sin against Him. Notice that the legalistic religious crowd and worldly non-believers were mocking Jesus saying, “show us that you are who you claim to be by getting down from the cross and saving yourself.” They went as far as to say, “if you come down then we will believe you.” Reading chapters 22-23 and seeing all that Jesus endured: being dragged from one authority to another, slapped about and beaten, mocked as a king with a robe and a crown made of thorns pressed into the skull of His head, spat on, lied on, and more, it should humble each believer knowing that Jesus did it all, endured it all, went through it all, for us all. Knowing that He could have come down but allowed Himself to be conquered so believers can be victors is a reason why believers should have a great appreciation of the fact that salvation is free, but it’s not cheap!
One thief mocked Jesus just as the crowd had done, but he was rebuked by the other thief who said, “don’t you respect God! We are getting what we deserve because we are guilty, but this man has done nothing wrong!" This thief wasn’t present when Jesus turned water into wine or spoke peace to the storm. He was not present when Jesus walked on water or took the two fish and five loaves of bread and fed thousands. He was not there when Jesus made the lame to walk, the dumb to talk, nor the blind to see. When the thief saw Christ, Jesus looked helpless with nails in his hands, spikes in his feet, bloodied and beaten, but he saw Christ. He confessed his sins, demonstrated his faith and hope by turning to a dying Jesus and said, “Lord when you get into your Kingdom, remember me.” There is no record of the thief’s baptism or of him going to church or giving tithes. Still, Jesus stopped dying just to make the dying thief a promise, “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Lord, Remember Me!
