A Father Waiting on His Child to Come Home
Luke 15: 11-25
Our Father’s Day message highlights the goodness of our heavenly Father. This is one of a trilogy of parables given by Jesus after being criticized by His religious haters. They saw Jesus engaging with sinners of all type and doing so intimately by eating with them. Jesus gives three parables to show how our Heavenly Father feels about His children. In the first parable, one of a hundred sheep is lost. The shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to search for the one that was lost, demonstrating in this parable that it does not matter how small one may be, they are valued by the Father. In the second parable, a woman loses one of ten coins inside of her home. By moving everything in the house to find it she indicates its worth. In the third parable, the younger of two sons decides that home is too restrictive so he asks his Father to give him the inheritance that would be due him if his Father had died. After the Father gives him his share the young man goes out into the world and wastes what he had been given on worldly living and becomes broke, busted, and disgusted! He finds himself in a pig pen about to start eating the pig’s food but comes to himself and decides to return home in a state of repentance. The Father was watching and waiting for his son, and when he saw the child approaching in the distance, the father ran to meet his son and restored him to his family position.
