Sunday Message Summary

Speaker: Pastor T.C. Johnson

Date: Sunday, October 13, 2024

Topic: "Man Cannot Live By Bread Alone"

Scripture: Matthew 4:4

From the desk of Pastor T.C. Johnson

The temptation of Jesus immediately after His baptism and at the beginning of His ministry. The event may be a lesson that explains some of the challenges that are faced by those who are call to serve in God’s plans for His Kingdom.  It shows that temptations, trials, and tests may be precursors that influence the type of servant one will become.  If that is the case Jesus would more than likely measure his ministry by mess.  In the context of the message, Jesus is led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. He left his baptism where he had been validated by his Farther and the Holy Spirit. He sees heaven opened and the Spirit descends and light upon him and he hear his Father’s voice say, “This is My beloved son in whom I am well pleased.”  One would expect a celebration or feast with great Pomp and Circumstances, but the next scene is in a desert, hungry, and being menaced by the devil.

The devil tries to tempt Jesus to use His power and position to provide for Himself and others and thereby prove that He was the Son of God. There is an implied question of what kind of Messiah/Savior Jesus should be.  Satan’s position is that Jesus should be a Health and Welfare Savior and provide for the needs of the people by giving them food, clothing, housing, and the likes, and that doing so would make people better for the kingdom and God. Jesus repeats a portion of Deuteronomy 8:3, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of the Lord.”  Jesus knew that God had given His people bread in the desert and they still complained and were not faithful and obedient. Adam failure was in paradise where all resources were provided. Jesus knew that just having things would not address man’s ultimate problem, sin. It is not that things are bad or not needed or shouldn’t be had, it is that we must not and cannot depend on things alone. Jesus teach His followers to seek first the kingdom of heaven and all other things will be added.

Be Blessed!

Pastor T.C. Johnson
