God Sees You!
Genesis 16:7-13; 17:20-21; 21:17
Context: Genesis 16 and Genesis 21
Ishmael was born as a result of Sarai and Abram trying to “help God” fulfill His promise to them. Hagar, Sarai’s servant and Ishmael’s mother, was obedient to her mistress; yet she was despised, mistreated, and ultimately abandoned.
Ishmael became a child caught in the middle of intense family conflict — the rejected son of Abraham, suspended between two destinies: the “main” promise through Isaac and his own role as the overlooked firstborn.
- Dysfunctional Family:
Born to Abraham through Sarah’s servant, Hagar, Ishmael was the product of Abraham and Sarah’s impatience while waiting on God’s promise. He lived between two painful realities: his mother’s status as a servant and Sarah’s jealousy, which eventually led to Hagar and Ishmael being cast out after Isaac was born.
- Divine Intervention:
After fleeing into the wilderness and later being sent away, Hagar and Ishmael encountered God in the desert. Though Ishmael was not the child of the covenant promise, God still heard his cry. God promised to make a great nation from Ishmael’s descendants because he too was Abraham’s son.
If you have ever felt unplanned, overlooked, rejected, or like you were not the “chosen” one — if it seems someone else gets the spotlight, the miracle, or the favor while you sit in a desert season waiting for hope — remember this: God sees you. God hears your cry. He knows your place in the greater picture.
This sermon helps us realize that God can take the messes created by human impatience, brokenness, and dysfunction, and through His redeeming power, still brings forth blessing and purpose. Just as God saw Hagar and heard Ishmael, He sees you and hears you, too.
