Help Me Lift Jesus
John 12:31-32 (KJV)
32 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
There was a time when people showed their appreciation to God by thanking Him for everyday things, many of which are taken for granted today: waking them up and letting them see another day, putting food on the table, giving them a reasonable portion of health and strength, they would verbally express thanks for what seemed like little things. I know now that they were lifting and glorifying the Lord and lifting the name of Jesus. Of course, in this passage Jesus is on His way to be nailed to and lifted on the cross and literally, He is talking about being lifted to die. However, there is a spiritual meaning because He says, “I will draw all people unto me”. Jesus is revealing God not as the God of a special nation or people, but as a global God with love for all mankind. Jesus was troubled because of the physical and emotional pain that He was about to experience. The emotional pain of being separated from the Father must have been unbearable since He had said “the Father is in me, and I am in the Father”. The fact that Jesus suffered and went through it all for us should motivate every believer to lift Him often. When He was lifted on the cross the intention was to kill Him, bury Him, and get Him out of their way, but the Father lifted Him, giving Him all power to save us. When we lift Jesus, it is to let others know that it is not by our might or strength that we exist but by the grace of God. Where this dark world needs light, help me lift the Light of the world; where it needs food, help me lift the Bread of Life; where it has sickness, help me lift the Great Physician; where it’s blind with hate, help me lift the One who loved the world so much that He gave his only son. Will you Help me lift Jesus?
