Sunday Sermon - April 19, 2026
|
Text: John 16:33
Subject: “Cheer Up: The Lord's got this!!!”
Tribulations are a part of this life for all of us! It does not matter how young, old, rich, poor, educated, or anointed; nor how long you have been in the church… as long as you are in this world, you will encounter tribulations. Tribulations are defined as: pressure, oppression, distress, afflictions, and tests of faith. The way you respond to tribulations is a key factor in determining your outcome. In other words, your outlook determines your outcome!!! We as God's children must develop the mindset that even though tribulations are at my address, I am going to cheer up because God's already worked it out!!! The word ‘cheer’ has to do with encouragement, approval, and gladness. When Jesus says, ‘be of good cheer’, he was saying, "Be of good comfort, be of good courage, have a good heart on it, all shall be well." Jesus in the text is giving his disciples a farewell sermon as he was preparing to leave, and he prepares them for what they would face after his departure. Jesus was returning to be with his Father. He was giving them assurance that even though he would have to leave them he was not leaving them alone; he was leaving them with the Comforter (Holy Spirit). Jesus gave them reassurance that even though they would feel sorrow he would also give them joy. Jesus also promised to give them support through the Comforter (Holy Spirit) who would help them through all that they would face. Then finally Jesus concludes, "These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace...” If you want peace then you can find peace in Jesus (whatever you need Jesus has it)! Isaiah 26:3 reminds us, "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee". He continues...“In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good Cheer I have overcome the world." Jesus told them that the hour was coming when they would all leave him alone when he was arrested due to the persecution they would face and they would all abandon him, but he also said, "yet I am not alone because the father is with me." I'm so glad that no matter how bad things seem, God is with me... That's how I made it this far because God is with me... That's why I survived the storms of life... That's why I'm still in my right mind because God is with me!!! In other words, tribulations will come but, ‘Cheer Up’ because what you encountered has already been overcome since one Friday, the same Jesus died, but early Sunday morning he got up so I can be an overcomer, victorious, and a survivor through all of the tribulation in this world!
